Digital One Switches On 62nd Transmitter

Three quarters of a million people have improved service or access for the first time for national commercial digital radio stations, with the switching on, by NTL, of the 62nd transmitter in the Digital One national network.

The Angus transmitter, which was switched on last week, links the existing transmission area in North East Scotland between Aberdeen and the coast and the Glasgow region. Digital radio listeners in this area can now recieve the seven unique digital only radio stations broadcast by Digital One, along with Classic FM, Virgin Radio and talkSPORT.

Digital One chief executive Quentin Howard, commented: “The digital radio revolution is picking up momentum day by day as more and more people discover the benefits of improved sound quality, interference-free reception and an explosion in listening choice.”

The Digital One network coverage currently exceed 80% of the UK population, giving a potential audience of 46 million. The target is to achieve 85% coverage by the end of this year. It is hoped that the second half of 2002 will also see the launch of a new range of digital radio products with prices starting at around £100, helping to ease the problem of affordability facing the format.
