Digital Radio Extension For Smash Hits Brand

Emap Performance is preparing to launch Smash Hits Radio on Emap’s digital multiplexes across the North of England and London.
With inspiration for content said to come from Kiss 100 FM, the station will broadcast pop music and celebrity gossip 24 hours and day, seven days a week from Monday 27 May to a potential audience of nearly 20 million people.
Andy Roberts, Emap’s group programme director will be overseeing the station. He commented: “Digital radio has been relatively slow to develop in the UK. To drive take-up, the market needs more unique and compelling propositions, offering the audience fresh, innovative and different radio. Smash Hits Radio will be just that.”
Smash Hits Radio will be broadcast on Emap’s wholly owned digital multiplexes, including Tyne & Wear, Liverpool, Teeside and Central Lancashire, as well as the London and Manchester multiplexes it owns jointly with Capital and on switchdigital, covering Central Scotland including Glasgow and Edinburgh.
This is the latest in a long line of brand extensions from the original Smash Hits teen magazine. Also in the Emap portfolio is the Smash Hits non-terrestrial music channel, the Smash Hits Radio Show on Emap’s Big City network, SmashHits.net, the Smash Hits Poll Winners’ Party and tour and Smash Hits CDs.
