Today sees the launch of digital radio in the UK. The Digital One consortium, which won the award for Britain’s national commercial digital multiplex licence over a year ago (see Radio Authority Awards Digital Radio Multiplex To Sole Applicant) begins broadcasting today.
Over the last year the group, a joint venture between GWR and NTL, has united a wide range of radio services which will more than treble the choice of national commercial stations. Five services launch today which will gradually be increased to a total of ten at a rate of one a month thereafter; new services Planet Rock and teenage chart channel, Core, will join Classic FM, Talk Radio and Virgin Radio, which will simulcast their existing FM and AM services on the new national digital radio network.
