Digital Radio Network Lines Up Possible Programme Suppliers
Digital One, the national digital radio network run by GWR and NTL, has lined up 30 tenders to supply programmes for its raft of new digital channels (see Digital One Advertises Three Channel Tenders).
Three new channels will be available when the service launches in the fourth quarter of this year: Plays, Books and Comedy, soft Adult Contemporary music and an all night dance club station.
Digital One chief Quentin Howard said that the bidders cannot be named at present but that the tenderers included most of the UK’s major radio groups, publishers, TV and radio broadcasters and content production companies. “The response has exceeded all our expectations and reflects the fact that digital radio is now attracting a great deal of interest from existing broadcasters and new media players too,” adds Howard.
When the Digital One network launches later in the year it will also broadcast the three existing national commercial stations, Virgin, Classic FM and Talk Radio. A further four channels are planned for introduction following the launch.
