Digital TV To Give Blast-Off To Home Shopping, Say CIA

By the year 2005, 42% of households will have digital television, according to the latest CIA MediaVision predictions for this month. This makes an analogue switch-off date between the years 2010 and 2012 a possible target.

As well as this, CIA predicts that if penetration of digital TV is as high as 75% come 2010, then low-cost, basic, possibly Government subsidised digital converters may be provided to encourage anyone leftover to convert to digital, thus setting the stage for interactive TV.

CIA MediaVision estimates that the home shopping market is currently worth about £8.5 billion in the UK. Retail consultants Verdict estimate that ‘electronic retailing will move from its current position of 2% of home shopping sales to 10% of all consumer spending by 2010’.

Data published by NOP earlier this year shows that of all internet users to have purchased products online, they purchased:

Books 24%
Consumer Electronics 20%
Travel Products 19%
Information Products 19%
Games 18%
Music CD’s 13%
Clothing 7%
Flowers 7%

Digital Television, according to these prediction, will therefore unleash high-volume home shopping and banking.
