Direct Mail Increase

The volume of direct mail has increased by 11% in the first quarter of 1994, according to the latest figures from the Direct Mail Information Service. There were 705m items mailed during the first 3-months of 1994, compared with 632 in 1993. Total expenditure on direct mail increased by 16%, up from £233.3m in the first quarter of 1993 to £270.8m in 1994.

Financial services was one sector to show a particularly high increase in the use of direct mail, with banks increasing their volume by 68% to 47m items and building societies increasing by 36% to 15m items.

Sectors whose use of direct mail has declined include manufacturing, travel and the Post Office.
