Disney+ is expected to overtake Netflix in subscription terms in six years, according to new forecasts.
Digital TV Research’s SVOD Forecasts Update report said Disney+ will add 146 million subscribers to its platform between 2021 and 2027 while Netflix will add 60 million.
Most of those new Disney+ subscribers, 106 million of them, will be from 13 Asian countries which access Disney’s Hotstar brand.
Newer streaming platforms HBO Max and Paramount+ will increase their subscribers by 65 million and 55 million respectively by 2027.
Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV research told Mediatel News: “We’ve upgraded our forecasts for Paramount+ based on their impressive results for the second half of 2021.”
Global SVOD subscriptions will reach 1.75bn between 2021 and 2027 with three US-based platforms controlling half of these subscriptions.
China and the US will make up 48% of the world’s total by 2027.
