DoubleClick To Sell Ad Space On UK’s Fastest-Growing ISP

Freeserve, the free internet service provider (ISP) launched by Dixons in September (see Dixons Launches Free Internet Service), has struck a deal with US-based internet advertising company, DoubleClick, for the latter to sell ad space on the Freeserve websites.
DoubleClick UK’s managing director, Andy Mitchell, said: “We see Freeserve’s genuinely free offer of internet access as playing a major part in driving and broadening the UK’s internet consumer base.”
This represents DoubleClick’s first major push into the fast-growing European internet market. Freeserve has been incredibly successful since launch, claiming that it had gained 475,000 subscribers in the first two months (see Dixons Claims Record Breaking Growth For Freeserve).
Freeserve’s general manager, Mark Danby, this afternoon told Newsline that he believed that the service had grown to over the size of America Online (500,000 subscribers), making it the UK’s market-leading ISP. This should make the service very attractive to the growing number of internet advertisers. Danby said that DoubleClick should be the first call for all advertisers wishing to use Freeserve.
Freeserve has also announced a deal to carry Carlton Online’s two new websites, Jamba and Popcorn. Jamba was reviewed as this week’s Website of the Week this afternoon on Website Of The Week – Jamba.
Carol Dukes, MD at Carlton Online, said: “Dixons is really growing the internet market with Freeserve, and we are delighted to be working with them to create a service that is fun, easy to use and useful for consumers. Popcorn and Jamba represent ‘best of breed’ British content on the Web, and we will be creating additional benefits specifically for Freeserve users.”
