Doubts Over Express Sale
According to a report in the Financial Times, United News and Media has no intention to sell the group’s national newspapers; the Daily Express, the Sunday Express and the Daily Star.
United News and Media has received no formal offers of any kind for Express Newspapers, according to the article, with the only circumstance in which it would sell being if it received an offer so large it would have a legal duty to shareholders to accept. Rumours of an impending sale have stemmed from talks the company has had this year with most of the other national newspaper groups, centring on whether savings could be made by the newspapers sharing functions.
The immediate aim of United is to appoint a new editor for the Daily Express, either from internal or external candidates, to improve morale on the papers, and to try to reverse declining circulations.
