DTN Responds
Digital Television Network, the group who lost its application for the digital multiplex licences B,C and D to British Digital Broadcasting, has issued a joint-statement following the result. James Gatward, chairman of DTN and Barclay Knapp, president and chief executive of NTL, the cable and broadcasting services group who own DTN, said: “We are disappointed by the decision. We welcome the fact that the ITC preferred DTN’s innovative programming plans. However, the decision to award the licences to BDB raises continuing and serious concern in relation to competition and other matters. We are currently considering our options.”
These options may include challenging the decision in the courts on the grounds that it restricts competition. Carlton and Granada now wield extensive power over the industry and BSkyB, although no longer a shareholder in BDB, will still have a major role in the service as a programme supplier.
DTN, on the other hand, may take more amicable action and could contemplate offering to supply BDB with the programming and services it proposed in its unsuccessful bid.
