Eastwood Thriller Has Absolute Power Over Channel 5 Ratings

A Clint Eastwood film which averaged 3.1m viewers when it aired on Channel 5 helped give the station its second best ever weekly audience share. Unofficial overnight figures showed that when Absolute Power went out on Tuesday it achieved a 17% share. This helped give the channel an 8.4% share for the day, beating Channel 4 in peaktime, and contributed to the week’s total of 6.5%.

Channel 5 has only achieved a higher weekly audience figure once in more than three years of broadcasting. This was in September last year, when it screened England’s Euro 2000 qualifier in Poland. On that occasion weekly share was 7.8% (see Channel 5 Reports Best Week Ever).

Earlier this year it was revealed that Channel 5’s film output was popular with regular ITV viewers (see Feature: Channel 5 Films Boost Viewing Share

Another possible ratings winner for Channel 5 could be the live broadcast of the Queen Mother’s anniversary pageant. The rights to show the Horse Guards Parade on 19 July were originally expected to go the BBC, but it has declined on the grounds that over £1m has already been spent on other programming to cover the celebration. Channel 5 is now expected to step in for its first foray into public service broadcasting.
