The European Federation of Magazine Publishers Associations and the Periodical Publishers Association have called for urgent meetings with the European Commission and the UK Government following recent revisions to the text of the EC distance selling directive.
The latest version of the directive bans the practice of payment before delivery. This would effectively mean an end to subscription sales, mail- order advertising and reader offers, also hampering telephone sales operations.
The PPA has stressed the satisfactoryoperation of the PPA Mail Order Protection Scheme in the area of cash-with-order advertising, as well as pointing out the substantial damage which will be suffered by magazines throughout Europe.
