Edge Celebrates Birthday With Special Editions

Future Publishing’s flagship computer games magazine, Edge, is to celebrate its tenth anniversary with ten special covers.
The special collector’s covers, which will appear in September’s issue, will each feature the ten most important genres of computer games, from adventure and puzzles to sports and strategy.
Commenting on Edge’s anniversary issue, the magazine’s publisher, James Binns, said: “Since the magazine’s launch in 1993, Edge has remained true to its original philosophy while evolving to accommodate momentous changes such as the launch of Sony’s PlayStation.”
He continued: “We’ve invested heavily in this promotion with a premium five-colour print bag and extra retail spend. We continue to invest in the Edge brand including sponsorship of the Edinburgh International Games Festival, recent specials such as Equip and Retro, and bonus supplements with the magazine.”
The tenth anniversary issue of Edge will go on sale on 4 September with a cover price of £4.
The latest ABC results for the six months ending June 2003 brought bad news for the magazine, with circulation dropping 12.1% year on year to 27,315.

Analysis of the circulation of Edge over the past ten years reveals fairly constant sales, a rarity in the fickle world of computer games magazines.
The title has benefited from the fact it is not based on one particular system or genre and instead focuses on a range of technologies and interactive entertainment. It is therefore less subject to the ongoing development of computer consoles.
Future Publishing recently appointed Jacquie Duckworth as advertising director for its London based-magazines, following the creation of separate directorial roles in its London and Bath offices (see Future Publishing Appoints New Ad Director).
