Liz Jones, the editor of Marie Claire, has resigned from her position, to be replaced by Marie O’Riordan. The news came as a shock to the magazine world yesterday and it has been speculated that a dip in circulation forced the decision.

Marie-Claire, which is owned by IPC Media, fell 11% in the latest ABC report in a bad year for women’s monthlies. Jones’s decision to step down appeared to be a personal one, however; a statement said she is leaving to spend more time writing for magazines and for the national press.

Marie Claire‘s success depends on its team, and I have been privileged to work with such a talented and creative group of people. Together, we have produced a variety of pioneering features for our readers, with some of the world’s top names speaking exclusively to us. It has been a tough decision to make, and I will miss everyone,” she said.

O’Riordan, who is currently publishing director of Emap Elan’s teenage sector, will join the title next month. She has formerly been editor of both Elle and more! magazines.
