Elle Girl Bailey Named As New Elle Editor

Emap has announced that Elle Girl launch editor Sarah Bailey is to take over the role of editor at Elle with immediate effect, heading off for her first round of Paris fashion shows this weekend.
Barry McIlheney, chief executive of Emap Elan said: “She is a proven editor and has shown her talent as editor on Elle Girl (see New Teen Titles Launch). She also has the advantage of being an Elle girl from her head to her Manolos. Sarah has fought off the toughest competition from rival editors and journalists in London, New York and Sydney to secure the role.”

Among those rivals tipped for the position were thought to be Mandi Norwood, who edited UK Cosmopolitan before moving to New York to edit Mademoiselle, current Cosmo editor Lorraine Candy, Vogue features editor Bronwyn Cosgrove and Jo Elvin, editor of last year’s most successful glossy magazine launch Glamour (see Handbag-Sized Glamour Proves Big Success).
It’s the challenge of Elvin’s Glamour that will likely prove the toughest for Bailey. Elle took a 6% year on year fall in circulation in the July-December ABCs (see Newsline), thanks in part to the pressure of Glamour’s low price, well-received editorial and effective marketing. Despite a price rise for Glamour it will remain cheaper by some margin than its rivals on the monthly women’s fashion and lifestyle market and all but the strongest in the market, Cosmopolitan, have showed signs of strain in circulation figures since its launch a year ago.
