Emap is thought to be looking to expand its US portfolio by competing to buy Time Mirror Magazines, publishers of US special interest titles including Field and Stream.
The magazine division is being sold off by Tribune, which acquired the Times Mirror publishing group earlier in the year. Given Emap’s position in the US, thanks to acquisitions including that of Petersen’s last year (see Emap Sends UK Staff Out To US Interests), the purchase of Times Mirror Group would be a logical move to strengthen its market standing.
When asked to confirm whether it was involved in the auction, which is being run by Merrill Lynch, Emap declined to make comment. Shares in Emap ended yesterday up 4p at £11.84 (see Sharewatch).
