Emap Disposes Of Euro Business Titles, But Targets Euro Lads
Emap is to make changes to its positioning in Europe with plans announced last week. While on the one hand it is disposing of 25 business titles chiefly in Germany and Switzerland, on the other it is planning the launch of one of its successful consumer titles in Holland.
The company is planning to launch FHM in Holland on 21 September. Emap acquired the title six years ago (see EMAP Buys FHM) and has grown it successfully thanks to the rise of ‘lad culture’, to its current position as leading men’s magazine in the UK (see Men’s Lifestyle Market Makes A Comeback). Versions have already been launched worldwide, including for Australia and the US (see EMAP To Launch FHM In The US).
The title will be published under license by De Telegraaf Tijdschriften Groep, one of Holland’s largest consumer publishing groups. Emap’s international managing director, Chris Llewellyn, said, “The Dutch magazine market is the eighth largest in the world, and in terms of advertising revenues is projected to be one of the fastest growing in the next two years. Launching FHM now is both logical and timely.”
The business magazines and directories, which deal with the areas of construction, media and automotive, are being bought up by Bertelsmann for £14.3 million cash. This sale follows the disposal last November of 13 business titles and seven events to Informa for £28 million (see EMAP Disposes Of Business Titles For £28m). The revenue raised will be used to reduce the group’s borrowings and support new investment.
