Emap Moves Rich In As Advertising Boss

Transmitter Emap Advertising has confirmed the appointment of Marcus Rich, currently managing director of Emap Performance, as its new managing director.

The new role will see Rich assume responsibility for Emap Advertising’s 250-strong team from 11th May 2005, continuing to report to Paul Keenan, chairman of the Emap Advertising Board, and maintaining his role as head of Performance, as well as Emap Elan.

The latest move follows work for Rich in a variety of roles at Emap since joining the cross-media giant in 1992. Having held positions as managing director of Emap Australia and managing director of FHM Worldwide, some of the new MD’s key achievements include the acquisition of FHM magazine and a pivotal role in its development to a £150 million business.

Rich also engineered two key acquisitions to form Emap Australia, a business which grew 80% under his directorship. Emap’s TV business has also flourished under his guidance, with the company optimistic over its future growth potential.

Commenting on his appointment, Rich said: “I am delighted to be taking up this role, joining a business that is so widely regarded for its innovation, creativity and outstanding customer service and ambitious to do more and better. Emap Advertising’s people are also recognised as among the best in the industry.”

Paul Keenan, chief executive of Emap Consumer Media and chairman of Emap Advertising added: “Marcus brings great experience to the role of Emap Advertising MD, with an outstanding track record of business growth and development during his 13 years at Emap. I look forward to working closely with him and the team to continue to drive Emap Advertising forward.”

Rich will lead a high-powered management team in his new role, including broadcast sales director, Karen Stacey, magazines sales director, Carrie Barker and cross-media sales director, Jane Kesley.

Emap recently announced a strong performance in its UK consumer magazine division, with copy sales revenues growing by 5% on an underlying basis. In an upbeat pre-close trading statement, the group revealed that its consumer magazine advertising division has enjoyed a 4% year on year rise for the year ending 31 March 2005, with celebrity-focused Closer showing exceptional growth (see Emap Sees Rising Revenue From Magazines).
