Emap Plans To Launch The Hits Format On Scottish Radio

Emap is planning to launch a radio version of its music TV channel, The Hits, in Scotland as part of its application for the new Glasgow FM radio licence.

The Hits radio format, which is thought to be a reaction to the initial success of the TV brand on the new Freeview platform, will combine elements of Emap’s other stations, which include London-based Kiss, Kerrang! and Smash Hits.

The station will broadcast on a restricted service licence from 26 November until 20 December and will feature local DJs, showbiz updates from Emap’s Heat magazine and live coverage of gigs from bands such as the Sugababes and Coldplay.

The initiative is part of an extensive research project in the Glasgow region to identify the gaps in the current commercial radio market. Initial findings show that listeners are looking for a new radio station that plays mainstream music by day and specialist music by night.

Commenting on the launch, Emap Performance’s chief executive. Tim Schoonmaker, said: “I think that a broadly-based radio station, which includes Kiss, Kerang! and Smash Hits music could be a great addition to radio choice in Glasgow.”

Earlier this month Emap posted a strong set of first half financial results, showing that pre-tax profit before exceptional items was up by 23% to £86 million during the six months to 30 September 2002 (see Emap Shows Good Results In Improving Markets).
