Emap Automotive has announced the closure of its established computing title, Internet Magazine, with the current issue marking the end of the title’s ten-year run.
The decision was taken following a sharp decline in circulation and a downturn in the market for internet publications in general. The title had dipped by 26% to just over 14,000 in the last year, losing over 5,000 readers in real terms.
A spokeswoman for Emap Automotive explained the reasoning behind the magazine’s closure, stating: “The internet magazine market has shrunk dramatically over the last couple of years, to a point where we feel it is no longer a marketplace that we want to be in. The June issue will therefore be the last issue.”
She added: “As part of Automotive, Internet never really sat neatly with the other titles in that division, but this is not part of a larger strategy of closures.”
Internet Magazine launched in 1994 to capitalise on the internet boom of the 90’s, however, almost all titles in the sector have suffered a decline. Future Publishing’s Internet Works now takes top spot in the market, but with a circulation of just over 14,000, similar to that of Internet Magazine, it too could be facing imminent closure.
The move follows Emap’s closure of J-17 last month and the demise of style bible, The Face last week after failing to find a suitable buyer for the veteran men’s mag (see Emap Closes Face After Failing To Find Buyer).
