EMAP Radio Awarded Tyne & Wear Digital Radio Licence
The Radio Authority has awarded the digital radio multiplex licence for the Tyne & Wear to the sole applicant, EMAP Digital Radio. Covering an area with a population of around 1.4 million, EMAP will broadcast eight programme services including its Magic and Kiss formats.
Other services include Xfm, provided by Capital Radio, and an Adult Contemporary channel, provided by Talk Radio. EMAP intends to begin broadcasting the digital service to Tyne & Wear in November 2000.
The Radio Authority has also received one application for the Wolverhampton, Shrewsbury and Telford digital licence. The applicant, Now Digital, is wholly-owned by the GWR Group. Now Digital will offer nine programme services to the area, which has an adult population of around 1.1 million.
