Emap Radio’s Local Licence Masterplan

Emap Radio’s Local Licence Masterplan

Emap Radio have linked up with Capital Radio to discuss a possible local digital licence bid. September this year will see licences in the Manchester, Birmingham and Greater London areas being made available by the Radio Authority (RA).

This venture will be seen as a cautious move by both companies, after Capital recently declined the opportunity to handle the national digital licence offered by the RA (see Capital Says No To National Digital Radio) . Concerns over the costs of running a national licence put Capital off digital radio, where consumer interest is relatively unknown, whereas a local licence will offer the company a chance to ‘test the water’.

A spokesperson for Emap said the moves form part of the company’s masterplan to focus investment in a number of local digital licences around the country.

DMG Radio, part of Daily Mail & General Trust, and Manchester Evening News may join the talks that Emap and Capital have already been having with other groups like Chrysalis and Golden Rose Communications.
