Emap To Axe Sky While IPC Says ‘See You’ To Later

Emap is to close its men’s lifestyle magazine Sky while IPC’s men’s magazine Later also faces the chop.

It is thought that Emap’s last issue of Sky will be the July edition. Launched in 1988 as an entertainment title, the magazine reached its readership peak in the late 90’s with over 185,000. However, the title’s signature raunchiness was overshadowed by the burgeoning lad’s mag market and Sky appeared to lose its way from then on.

Despite the entertainment market’s massive 50% boom in the latest ABCs (see Heat Blazes A Trail Across TV Sector), Sky, now repositioned as a lads mag, suffered along with most of that sector (see Men’s Lifestyle Titles take A Tumble), dropping 35.2% of its circulation year on year to just 65,000.

IPC’s Later launched in 1999 and managed an initial ABC figure of over 90,000. This did not turn out to be a sustainable achievement, and by the last audit this figure had slipped to just over 70,000.
