Emap’s Celebrity Looks Fades Away

Emap is closing its monthly hair and beauty title Celebrity Looks after admitting that it could no longer make the magazine work in the current market.

A spokeswomen for Emap today confirmed that April’s issue of the magazine, which launched in 1983 as a spin-off from J17, would be the last. She said: “A great deal of effort has been made to sustain the title but it’s been struggling in the face of increasing competition from the celebrity and glossy sectors.”

Last April Emap relaunched the title, previously just called Looks, with an increased celebrity focus (see Emap Moves Looks Into Celebrity Territory). However, the magazine saw circulation drop 18.46% to 113,564 in the latest ABC results and with Conde Nast’s Glamour, BBC Worldwide’s Eve and Time Life’s Instyle all entering the market within the last year, competition within the women’s monthly sector has increased significantly (see Newsline).

Emap insists that every effort will be made to “relocate” the magazine’s editorial staff and maintains that it is working on a number of new projects, including a new teen title codenamed project “Monkey” (see Emap To Launch New Teen Weekly).
