Emap’s Total Sport To Close

Emap’s Total Sport magazine is to close after four years. Editor Paul Hamblin said that there was no market in the UK for a general monthly sports title.

The news comes just five months after the relaunch of the mag, when it was repositioned to delve “inside sport” and provide its readers with insider knowledge which couldn’t be found elsewhere. It was transferred from Emap’s Metro division to Emap Active and initially improved its sales. The latest ABC audit, however, reports an overall drop in circulation of 18%.

Hamblin said the title was well-liked in the sports industry but lost out due to the frequency of other titles: “Sport is a day-to-day business and it is covered too much by other media.”

The last issue will be December 1999.
