The X Factor final on ITV1 on Saturday night managed to triumph over BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing, which doesn’t see its winner crowned until next week.
An average of around 8.8 million adults tuned in to see the final performances from the last two contestants, giving ITV1 an almost 44% viewing share at the time, leaving Robin Hood on BBC One with 4.2 million adult viewers, or 21.4% of the audience.
The singing contest lured in an average of nine million adults (42%) for the results, which saw previously tipped winner Leona Lewis gain the most audience votes, taking the £1 million recording contract and becoming the first woman to win the contest.
The second last week of Come Dancing, which saw the departure of Emma Bunton, managed to entice around 8.7 million adults to BBC One for its first instalment (46.7%), whilst its second edition, on at the same time as the X Factor results show, took almost seven million, or 31.6% of viewers.
Casualty rated highly for BBC One, on between X Factor programmes, gaining an average adult audience of around seven million, giving the channel an almost 35% viewing share at the time. Meanwhile on ITV1, Extinct: The Final was seen by 3.6 million, taking a 17.5% audience share.
