According to unofficial overnight figures from ITV, last night’s World Cup match between England and Romania attracted an average audience of 19.4 million and a share of viewing of 71%. ITV claims that viewing peaked at 21.6 million for the last quarter of an hour of the match.
These figures do not record viewing outside the home, in pubs for example. Despite this, ITV says that the match delivered the highest rating for a football match shown on a single channel during the last two decades, and the third highest total audience.
