ES: Pay-TV Row Worsens

In Spain, the row between digital broadcasters and central government has deteriorated. Legislation has already been approved by the cabinet to prevent companies running pay-TV stations from having exclusive rights to broadcast football matches. Grupo Prisa, which has pioneered pay-TV in Spain and which has recently launched the country’s first digital station – Canal Satellite Digital (CSD) – is accusing the government of being interventionist and interested only in protecting the state-run TV broadcaster, TVE. CSD has now lodged a formal protest with the EC over government plans to regulate the decoder market. Grupo Prisa says that the proposed law is “de facto expropriation” of football broadcasting rights.
