EU: Council Supports Encryption Framework

The EU Telecoms Council meeting in Luxembourg has welcomed a policy announced by the European Commission aimed at strengthening security and confidence in electronic commerce. In the conclusions adopted by EU Ministers, the Council invited the Commission to present a proposal for a Directive on electronic signing as soon as possible. The Commission considers that a European regulatory framework for electronic signing is necessary to facilitate cross-border use and to promote electronic commerce. The conclusions of the Telecoms Council highlight the increasing importance of cryptographic products and services for business, data protection and public services, as well as the employment potential presented by this industry.
