EU: Data Debates In Committee
The Conciliation Committee of the European Parliament and the Council have come to an agreement on the Directive on the processing of personal data and protection of privacy in the telecommunications industry. However, France intends to delay the agreement by a few weeks due to political considerations over the privatisation of France Telecom. The directive supplements a 1995 Directive on data protection and deals specifically with telecommunications networks. The principal aim is to protect individuals’ privacy and ensure confidentiality.
