Euro Digital TV Set To Become Billion Dollar Industry

European digital television service providers will share an $11 billion market by 2002 according to a new report from strategic business analysts Datamonitor. This coincides with news of BSkyB’s joint digital venture with BT (see yesterday’s Newsline).
The report suggests that there will be almost 20 million digital TV households in Europe by 2002, compared with just under 2 million at the end of 1997. This ten-fold increase is accompanied by an average revenue per household jump from around $40 per month to $50 per month.
Revenues ($m) | 1997 | 2002 |
---|---|---|
Subscriptions | 310 | 3,880 |
Advertising | 226 | 2,772 |
Transactions | 28 | 4,435 |
Total | 564 | 11,087 |
Datamonitor also says that subscriptions will continue to be the most important source of income for digital TV companies, with most packages based around pay-per-view and films. The number of interactive services available over the digital TV medium will also increase.
