European Changes Focus

European Changes Focus

The European is to undergo a revamp from November 4. In a shift in editorial direction, the focus will change away from news to a much more in-depth analysis and commentary of the news. The more serious role of the paper is to be emphasized by a reduction in large photographs.

The changes will mean that the European will be competing with the Financial Times, International Herald Tribune and the Economist.

The third section, Elan, the culture and lifestyle section which is currently broadsheet is to become a 32-page tabloid section. Marketing Manager Bernard Steel told MediaTel that this section will be “A celebration of the best that is European”, and will be a guide to the arts, culture and travel in Europe. Steel explained that their research has shown that readers use the third secion as a reference source, meaning it has a longer usage, and that therefore a tabloid format is best.

Ad rates will not be affected by the revamp. Former Times commercial director Jeremy Reed has been appointed head of the international ad sales department.
