European Parliament TV To Get EU Backing

According to a report in yesterday’s Sunday Times a non-terrestrial TV channel devoted to the European Parliament will receive most of its funding from the European Union.

The channel, which has been rumoured since January (Newsline 04/01), will be called the Citizen’s Channel and feature unedited debates of proceedings in Brussels. More than £700,000 has been set aside by the EU to help set the channel up and half of its estimated £8 million annual running costs will also be met by the EU.

It is hoped that the other half of the running costs will be met from company sponsorship. Europa-Vision, a non-profit Dutch-based organisation, is one of the main companies behind the launch.
