Evans Leaves Radio 1

Chris Evans yesterday announced that he would be leaving BBC Radio 1’s Breakfast Show at the end of March. His decision follows various wranglings with the station’s controller Matthew Bannister, though the catalyst seems to have been the fact that his request to have every Friday off was refused. In the past he has failed to turn up for his 6.30am-9am slot due to a drinking binge and labelled Mr Bannister the “fat controller” on-air.

He joined the station in April 1995 when Radio 1 was in the doldrums and initially increased its reach from 22% to 24%, though this rise soon levelled off and has failed to reach its earlier days of around the 35% mark.
