Evening Standard Overhauls Ad & Sales Team

The Evening Standard has appointed former Marks & Spencer advertising chief, Matthew Chambers, as brand controller and has overhauled its ad sales department in a bid to stem declining advertising revenues.

Chambers will report directly to Mike Anderson, the new managing director at the evening daily, who is overseeing the restructuring. He will work alongside ex-CIA managing director, Alan Brydon, who has replaced Mike Orlov as advertising sales director (see Evening Standard Loses Ad Sales Director).

The shake-up also includes six redundancies, including head of planning Neville Toptani, and follows news that Richard Desmond is planning the launch of a free evening newspaper for London. Insiders say that this has sent shockwaves through the offices of Associated Newspapers in the capital (see Desmond Plans To Launch New Evening Paper For London).

According to ABC figures for the six months ending August 2002, the Evening Standard has seen circulation decline by 2.3% year on year to 412,238, down from 421,799 in the same period the previous year.
