Express Newspapers Launch SmartMoney Business Section

Express Newspapers has announced that from this Sunday, 4 July, the Sunday Express is to experience some major editorial changes.

The paper’s business pages, Investor, is to be made into a separate broadsheet section called SmartMoney, which in turn will make room for an extension of the papers lifestyle and features sections. A new consumer orientated technology section is also being introduced about all things digital.

According to the latest national newspaper ABCs for May 1999, both Express titles recorded slight increases in net sales month on month. However, year on year period comparisons show that the Sunday Express has lost 8.4% of its circulation – an actual loss of nearly 91,000 – falling to 996,990.

Executive editor Michael Pilgrim hopes that the editorial changes will make the newspaper more competitive and better value for readers, and Richard Bogie, ad director at Express Newspapers commented: “The new SmartMoney section mean that we can now offer business advertisers greater prominence and premium advertising sites. Circulation is currently looking very strong and i am sure that these new developments will be a major contribution to the paper’s continued growth.”
