According to a report in the Sunday Times, the chairman of United Newspapers, Lord Stevens, is in the early stages of talks with Irish Independent Newspapers about the possibility of Independent Newspapers taking over United.
United Newspapers, which owns Express Newspapers, is thought to be interested in the deal to strengthen the company in the current battle amongst papers.
Independent Newspapers which owns 70% of Irish newspaper distribution, is believed to want to expand into Britain. Talks are still at a very early stage.
