Express Plunders IPC For New Celebrity Magazine Head

Richard Desmond’s Express Newspapers has appointed Victoria Hazell, former advertisement manager at IPC Connect, as its group magazine controller with responsibility for a range of celebrity titles including OK!, New! and Star.

The move will see Hazell charged with some of the company’s biggest brands, as well as the Daily Express and Sunday Express‘s magazine supplements. In total the company’s magazine operations generate advertising revenue in excess of £40 million per annum.

Commenting on the appointment, Stan Myerson, joint group managing director, said: “I am very pleased to welcome Victoria to the group. She is an enthusiastic strategic thinker with a strong background in managing and directing sales teams.”

Hazell began her career at IPC and has enjoyed several senior posts at at Dennis Consumer Publishing, Mollin Publishing and IPC Southbank. In 2003 she was named IPC’s advertisement manager of the Year for the year 2002 to 2003, and the following year was the manager of IPC’s Advertising Team of the year.

Commenting on her new role at Express Newspapers, Hazell said: “I’m looking forward to continuing to drive the success of the weekend supplements, and take the helm of the celebrity market’s most powerful portfolio.”

Earlier this month Richard Desmond reaffirmed his commitment to launching a free-sheet evening newspaper in London to compete directly with the Evening Standard. Desmond said that only a ruling from the Office of Fair Trading was holding up the process and that publishing would begin as soon as a decision had been made (see Desmond Reaffirms Plans To Launch London Free-Sheet).
