Family Fun At The Cinema In July
Cinema admissions in July reached 13.8 million, averaging over 3 million admissions a week, according to the latest figures from the Cinema Advertising Association (CAA).
Family films dominated the box office during July and with the school holidays in full swing admissions were up 48% on June. However even the success of July’s top film Shrek, which took £17.3 million over the course of the month, could not stop admissions from dropping almost 2% on the same period last year.
President of the CAA, Debbie Chalet, said: “The performance of family films is tremendous, at this time of year cinema offers a guaranteed dual viewing vehicle. Parents and children in large numbers, go and see blockbuster films together in an environment where they cannot switch or zap. Increasing numbers of advertisers are taking advantage of this including, Nissan, McDonalds and Yoplait.”
The success of films like Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Jurassic Park 3 and Evolution are testament to the importance of the younger audience, which has grown 27% over the last decade, according to CAVIAR.
Tomb Raider came in at number two for July taking £11.7m, Jurassic Park 3 and Evolution also did well, the former taking £10.1 for the month and the latter £3.8m.
