Financial Times To Expand Brand

The Financial Times Group and German publisher, Gruner & Jahr, have announced a joint venture today involving the expansion of The Financial Times brand.

The new venture will be a German language business newspaper. Printed on pink paper, the new publication will feature the familiar FT brand prominently, and will carry content from the english FT re-written, designed and published for the German market. A website will also be launched and integrated with FT.com.

The new title is to be edited by former deputy editor of The FT, Andrew Gowers.

Stephen Hill, chief executive of the Financial Times Group and first chairman of this new venture, commented: “This is a great opportunity for us to strengthen our position as Europe’s leading business publisher at a time of rapid economic and structural change. Germany represents a huge opportunity for the kind of insightful, analytic journalism which The FT represents.”

The Financial Times’ circulation in January 1999 was 384,679. Of this total, 205,198 of the sales were outside the UK – over 50% of its net circulation.
