First Advertising On 3G Planned

The first advertising on 3G phones in Europe is to go ahead, promoting the services of internet bank Smile.co.uk across the Manx Telecom infrastructure on the Isle of Man.

Online media planning company i-Level has negotiated the agreement, which, in the first instance, will see basic branding appearing on the 3G portal, although various formats and placements will be tried out and consumer reaction measured.

3G technology allows users to view pictures graphics and videos as well as the standard voice and data already available in mobile communications. Manx Telecom, a wholly owned division of BT’s MMO2, has just announced initial launch plans and is trialling the technology on the Isle of Man.

Commenting on the deal, Charles Dobres, CEO of i-Level, pointed out how important the deal will be in demonstrating the potential of the new platform and went on: “Despite some concern over timescales [for the launch of the technology], the fact is that the public already has a love of mobile phones and the services that 3G will ultimately offer will make their phones even more indispensable in their lives.”
