First Issue Review – Food And Travel
A slightly more grown-up version of Eat Soup and aimed at at a broader audience, Fox’s Food and Travel magazine is exotic, stylish and extravagant.
From articles on Tokyo’s fish markets and sushi bars to write-ups on far-flung places like Zanzibar, this is obviously aspirational stuff. But at the end of the day if a magazine is enjoyable because it opens a window on something which is exciting and different then it is surely no bad thing.
However, one gets the impression that Food and Travel doesn’t have its head in the clouds quite as much as Conde Nast’s Traveller: for example, it writes with passion and hyperbole about food but then goes on to give detailed recipes which are clearly aimed at getting people in to the kitchen.
Filled with high-quality colour photographs and a clean-looking minimalist design, the magazine is good to look at and easy to read. Despite having a more mature outlook, the text is written in a lively and often light-hearted way which is informative as well as interesting to read.
As well as the more in-depth pieces, there are also restaurant guides, book reviews, wine guides and B&B information.
Advertisers include Mulberry, Ernest & Julio Gallo wine, Baileys and travel companies. The ad:ed for the 100-page title ratio is 29:71.
