First Issue Review – The Express On Sunday Magazine

The Express On Sunday unveiled the latest stage of its image makeover yesterday. The Express On Sunday Magazine takes the place of Boulevard. The new title aims to have a happening modern 90’s feel. So why did the editorial team stick a 26 year old has-been craving to be a star again on the front-cover? Granted, she was naked, but surely a new launch needs a stronger bait? Maybe the idea was to tempt people to go beyond the front-cover to jog their memory and find out exactly who Minnie Driver is.

Nevertheless, despite a rather boring facia, the inside pages made potentially interesting reading. The Express is following the current media trend into unusual jobs, the Rare Breeds section looks at the different things people do to make a living. This week’s section was all about Eric Edwards, a marshman, it was a nice feature, but once again, we have to ask, wasn’t there a slightly more enticing employment subject for this first issue?

This was followed by a few pointless, but amusing features, such as wind-up of the week, this week’s being, ring-up The Savoy and ask them if they would host an S&M Party?

Towards the back of the magazine can be found the now staple parts of other Sunday papers, the gardening, interior design and cookery pages.

If you’ve got nothing better to do this magazine isn’t a bad read, but if its intention is to attract more readers to the already ailing newspaper, it needs to try harder than this.

The title has a total of 55 pages, 20 of which were advertising
