First Quarter Average Cinema Admissions Highest Since 1975.

Average weekly cinema admissions for March show an increase of 40.7% on March 1995 to 2.51 million, which in turn has contributed to a 31.4% increase for the first quarter of 1996 compared to the previous year – representing the highest quarter average since 1975.

The total monthly admissions figure for March was 11,123,531.

Top grossing films for the month were:

Toy Story (PG) £7.0m
Sense & Sensibility (U) £6.6m
Trainspotting (18) £6.3m
Jumanji (PG) £4.2m
Get Shorty (15) £3.5m

With the exception of Get Shorty all of the above films have gone on to break the £10m mark, with Toy Story taking £19m in just under 6 weeks – making it number two in top films of the year so far.

Interim estimates for April indicate at least a 30% increase on the previous year, with new releases such as Twelve Monkeys expected to perform strongly.
