First Quarter Success For Cinema Admissions

First Quarter Success For Cinema Admissions

The Cinema Advertising Association (CAA) has reported a good start to the year, with admissions for March up 43% year on year at 14.3 million and admissions for the first quarter of 2002 up 37% compared to the same period last year.

The star-studded Rat Pack remake Ocean’s Eleven took first place at the box office, taking £10.2m. This was followed by the still popular children’s film Monsters Inc, which took £6.8m, and has grossed £37.2m over the first three months of the year. Enjoying an even longer run of success was Lord of the Rings, still among the top ten films at the box office and taking £2.5m during the month.

Both Lord of the Rings and last year’s other major fantasy hit Harry Potter and the Philsopher’s Stone have contributed to the impressive first quarter admissions total of 48.3 million. The CAA is predicting admissions for the year to reach 164 million, an increase of 5% on 2001, but the medium’s performance in the first quarter suggests that this total may be exceeded.
