The BBC has appointed Lorraine Heggessey as the new controller of its flagship channel, BBC 1. The promotion from her current position as joint director of factual and learning, comes after it was announced that Peter Salmon is to leave the position to become director for sport (see Salmon Appointed BBC Director Of Sport).
Heggessey comes from a background in programme-making for the BBC, ITV and Channel 4, and is the first woman ever to take on this role. She will begin her new job on 1 November.
