Five Achieves Highest Viewing Share In History

Channel Five achieved its highest ever viewing share this October, according to unofficial overnight statistics from BARB.

The figures show that across the month, the channel attracted an average of 6.9% of all viewing, beating its previous best of 6.7% last February.

The channel also attracted a greater proportion of the lucrative 16 to 34 year old market, with 7.3% of viewing coming from this difficult to reach demographic group. October was also the channel’s best performing month for ABC1s.

According to Five, the channel’s record shares were the result of strong performances right across the schedule. Australian soap favourite Home and Away regularly attracted an audience of over 2 million, as did DIY series House Doctor. The channel also benefited from the terrestrial premiere of Hollywood blockbuster Gladiator, which attracted 3.8 million viewers and a 19% share.

The final ratings for the month are likely to generate an average share of 7% of all viewing.

Channel Five recently appointed Vizeum to take over its multi-million pound media planning and buying account from incumbent Walker Media (see Vizeum To Handle Planning And Buying For Channel Five).
