Flytxt Rolls Out SMS Campaign For BBC Sport Academy

Flytxt is launching an SMS campaign to promote the BBC’s Sport Academy to 10 to 16 year-olds.

The campaign begins next month and consists of a series of weekly sports challenges that will be sent to subscribers to test their sporting skills. Celebrities including Tim Henman, Nick Faldo and Kieoron Dyer, will take part in the promotion, which will be advertised in Match, Shoot Monthly, Smash Hits, Bliss and J17, as well as on the BBC website, mykindaplace.com, trouble.co.uk and another.com.

Users can subscribe to the service free of charge via the Sport Academy website, however, subscriptions are limited to the first 250,000 respondents.

Commenting on the initiative, Lars Becker, CEO of Flytxt, said: “The BBC are at the controls of this campaign, using Flytxt’s technology and user friendly interface, but sending and receiving all the messages themselves. For this campaign, SMS is a great way to reach the target audience while they’re out and about doing sports.”

BBC director of sport, Peter Salmon, added: “The BBC Sport Academy is all about getting young people motivated to take up sports. We all know every teenager has a mobile phone these days and the Academy SMS Celebrity Challenges can make them sit up, get out and take part”

The latest figures from the Mobile Data Association show that 1.3 billion person to person text messages were sent during June, an increase of 380 million on the same period last year (see Big Brother 3 Boosts June’s Text Message Total). June’s total was helped by Big Brother 3, which prompted more than 11 million people to cast their eviction votes via interactive TV or SMS text messages during the first six weeks of the show.
