Football Magazines Provoke Complaints
An advertisement for Future Publishing’s Total Football in PC Answers has drawn complaints due to its aggressive nature. The ad read “Do you fancy some, pal, or what?” and went on to state “Buy it or we will kick your ribs off.” The Advertising Standards Authority, reporting the complaint in its monthly bulletin, did not uphold the complaints, believing that the ad contained “terrace” humour and did not provoke hooliganism. It also believed that Total Football is aimed at an adult readership.
There were also complaints regarding a poster offer in Match magazine. The cover claimed “Free giant Asprilla and Giggs posters” and showed the two different pictures. Inside however, there was one poster with a different picture on either side: the complainants found the cover misleading because it made out there were two separate posters. The ASA upheld the complaints, stating that readers would have inferred two separate posters were on offer when this was not the case and warned the advertisers in future to state clearly if a poster was reversible.
