According to over night figures, at its peak, 12.5 million viewers tuned in to watch Manchester United’s 4-0 victory over Porto at Old Trafford on Wednesday night. On average, 11 million football fans watched the UEFA Champions League quarter final first leg match. This figure represents a 48% share of the audience.
ITV’s overall peak-time share for the evening was 49.3% against BBC1’s 27.7% share.
In comparison, the BBC broadcast Newcastle versus Monaco match on Tuesday night and achieved a peak audience of 9.3 million. However, Newcastle is not as popular a team as Manchester United.
